It is estimated that over one third of the American population suffers from chronic pain. To put that into perspective, Businesses in the U.S. lose on average over 60 billion dollars per year in productivity because of employees suffering from chronic pain. With suffering patients on the rise, so to are the surgical procedures to correct the varying forms and locations of pain. Common surgeries that are used to intervene for the pain are knee and shoulder arthroscopy, back, neck or ankle fusion, and knee and hip joint replacement. Although one may be recommended to undergo such a procedure, surgeries often require the need for revision surgeries--the correction of areas previously operated on. Surgeries such as fusions can be irreversible and its effects permanently damaging.
There are alternatives however. Methods such as Chiropractic and other forms of non-surgical pain intervention have proven to be effective in the treatment of chronic pain. Research has also shown chiropractic to be helpful in treating neck pain and headaches. In addition, osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia may respond to the moderate pressure used both by chiropractors and practitioners of deep tissue massage. Physical therapy is used to treat many orthopedic issues and sports injuries, but the practice is also used in cardiac and stroke rehabilitation and the treatment of neurological disorders, like multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease, and traumatic brain injuries. People often think of going to a physical therapist after a major injury requiring a lot of treatment. Sometimes people don't think to go to the physical therapist for minor issues such as wrist or back pain. The reasons physical therapists can tackle a wide array of conditions is because of their broad understanding of how injuries and conditions affect the movement of the body. Since no skin is being pierced, nor innards compromised, it is a much safer and more practical means of combating one's pain.
