Are you an athlete, or someone who leads an active lifestyle? If so, reaction times and reflexes are an important part of your training.
It’s not a topic that gets a lot of press. Most people are talking about building muscle or losing weight.
But reaction time is what lets you catch a ball as it hurtles through the air. Or swerve in traffic, for that matter, when conditions turn threatening.
And according to a study by the Australian Spinal Research Foundation, a regular regimen of chiropractic care is the way to make it happen.
“The study, a randomized, controlled trial conducted at an Army Hospital, looked at the effect of ‘chiropractic manipulative therapy’ on reaction times in special operations forces military personnel. Chiropractic manipulative therapy (CMT) has been shown to improve reaction time in some clinical studies. Slight changes in reaction time can be critical for military personnel, such as special operation forces (SOF). … The results showed that for each of the tests, the group that received a chiropractic adjustment showed faster reactiont imes when compared to the control group.” –BioMed Central Journal Trials
Patients started seeing results after a single session.
There are a few other ways to increase your reaction time as well. For example, Freeletics suggests taking a forest run.
“It’s all about training your brain to react to things. And running on uneven terrain is a great way to do this.”
Increased reaction times benefit more than athletes. If you’re reacting faster you’re more alert. Most of us can use more energy. Other studies have shown chiropractic care can help make you feel more awake and alert.
It can also help you reduce insomnia. Especially if your insomnia is caused, in part, by being in pain. Of course, it can’t do everything. You’re still not going to sleep well if you’re on a bad mattress.

No matter your personal goals, this study about chiropractic and reaction times demonstrates an important point. Most people come to the chiropractor only when they’re in pain. They want to get out of pain, and they aren’t really thinking about their overall health and body function.
Many of our patients disappear as soon as the pain stops. They don’t complete enough sessions to begin reaping the benefits of chiropractic maintenance. Some don’t even complete enough sessions to fully heal the source of their pain, which means the problem comes back again.
Those who do come back, and often, give us the chance to demonstrate everything else we can do.

We may be the Pain Relief Team, but the true goal of chiropractic care is to promote health. Not just to address sickness. Our modern lifestyle encourages us to think about “fixing” our bodies instead of optimizing them.
